South Louisiana’s Premiere Flying Club

Training Materials

Below are materials we recommend at Flyaway for training. Each lesson we expect you to arrive prepared with a logbook and appropriate charts, digital or paper. We provide a spare headset in each aircraft but highly recommend you get your own. In order to keep you organized and ready to learn, bring asmall notepad and pencil and a bag to carry everything.

FAA Handbooks

The FAA Handbooks are recommended by Flyaway for all reading and studying for each certificate or rating. Instructors will suggest chapters for self-study between flight lessons. Any ground school will also be based on these handbooks. These handbooks are produced by the FAA directly and are free on their website. If you would rather have a hardcopy, there’s also a link provided below.

Written Test Prep

Cloud Hopper Aviation approves self-study programs as long as the student continues to show progress and understanding. The written test is the #1 road block in flight training. Below are links to online test prep programs that we have found helpful. The FAA requires a 70% to pass but we require three 85% practice tests before endorsing a student to take the written test. The test results are good for 24 months.

Online Ground School

Cloud Hopper Aviation instructors provide 1-on-1 ground school catered to the student’s need. We require a minimum amount of ground school if the student is using another approved course online. A few lessons will be required for the hands-on applications like flight planning, performance, and weight and balance calculations. Below are a few online programs recommended by Flyaway if a student would prefer a self-study approach.
